The Legends of Khasak

O.V Vijayan, the central figure of post- modernist generation conquered the literary scene through his immensely influential works like 'Dharmapuranam, 'Gurusagaram, 'Khasakinte Itihasam which he translated as 'Legends of khasak',in 1994.

'Legend of Khasak' set in the backdrop of palghat country side, with chetali mountains. It is the land potent with dreams, legends and myths. The society filled with toddy tappers, shamans, religious elder people and so on. The whole land wrap with some sort of magic.

The central protagonist of the novel is 'Ravi', a young graduate drop out. He came to this place to purify his mind by the sin he committed with his step mother or the swamini. He commits to the single teacher school in remote khasak established by the District  Board to provided local children basic education. 'Allah picha Mollaka' is the only person who don't like Ravi because he kept an ezhuthu palli, once Ravi come he had a bad attendance in this school.

Vijayan portrays beautiful and meaningful characters through this novel like Nizam Ali (Mollaka's adopted child) Mimoona, Kuppu Achan, Sivaraman Nair, Appu kili (man-boy). Appu kili is a striking character when the story progress he seems to have bonded much with Ravi. Vijayan gave flesh and blood to all his characters.

At a particular part of the novel we can see Ravi seems to explore his physical passion almost with every women he meets when the epidemic hits khasak it sweeps many but leaves Ravi to complete his destiny. Finally when 'Padma' his lover take care of him and she cure his disease and he desired to leave khasak with her. But at the end we see that Ravi committed suicide to allowing a snake to take his life while waiting bus near koomankavu. It can be interpreted in two levels physical and spiritual. Snake being the symbol of sex it can be described as Ravi being swallowed by his sensuous personality or he realizes his real self.

This novel has a life of its own. O.V Vijayan take readers to a magical world. In this novel he gave a wide explanation about the sight of chetali mountain. He gave minute details regarding that particular place. This novel gave us a nostalgic feeling of our own place.

Is my dream come true?

Oh it's dark! raining outside,
windows were unbolted.
cool wind touches my body,
i shivered! it's soothe my soul.
A sound was heard all on a sudden,
it was nothing but the noise of thunder up there.
The sound of thunder frightened me,
on a sudden i wake up from a dream.

My wet cheeks longing-
for the warmth of your touch.
My sobbing heart, aching-
for you to soothe me.
I being waiting for a long time dear!
"Why are you away from me?"
You carry me like a wind.
I want to melt with u-
and find my own soul in eternity!!!!!!!

Is there real love exist today?

What is Love actually? Love is something so precious and pure as a child. Love gives warmth, care and protection to us. It is a magical thread from the god to attach each of us. Without love or commitments there is no life exist in this world. Actually it is a god,s gift.Love simply not means a love that occur in between two lovers, it may varies like brother love his sister, parents love there childrens and also there is love in between friends.

But now what happen to love? There is no love exist in this world, everyone cheat each other in the brand of 'love'. Today there is no commitments in between peoples.Lovers love blindly believing each other, but really love depends on wealth, physical appearance and so on. They cheat there parents for their love. They think that he/she will be safe in his/her hands. But actually now a days what had happen to them? after there use they move to another person, it is the fact. Today there is no love in this world.

There is no real love exist in between friends too. May many of them argue with me about this? but i strongly says that, because i have experience of my own. Areal friend never cheat us even when the situation is favor to them, but they don't do that is the real love. But now a days they never value there friends love and care. If the situation is verse and it may harm to them, they simply cheat us. A real friend do not stab behind us,

Today there is an expiry date in every one's love and relations. No one really love us without expecting anything from us. The real meaning and purity of love fade from the earth. Everyone's love ended in some points or other, but the one and only love exist in the world which never ends and that is our mother's love. She love and care us without expecting anything from us. But today we put them in old age homes. Till then also they love and pray for us.

According to me mother's love is the only real love that exist in the world. Friends come to our life in some point of time and there love had a time period. Husband's or wife's meet in some point in life and after then there love started, it too had a time period. But the one and only eternal love is our mother's love. She never cheat her childrens. Once's we made a mistake she correct it and guide us in the right path to attain our goal.'Never cheat your parent's, if you do so, then you loose a strange in your life'.

Loneliness...................

 I'm standing alone
loneliness kill me.......
I was crying aloud, but no one hears it,
All on a sudden raining bitterly
water pouring from the sky all around
Drops of rain swallow my tears,
Rain passes from me quickly
And i being alone once again.

No one recognize me-
even my loved ones.
I'm standing still with a smile
slowly i became darker and darker
I wipe my tears,with a smile
And-
At last i find my resting place!
Once again i look back
Only the drops of water remained here and there
I being warmth under the earth bed.

Lord of the Flies

William Golding portraits two worlds in his novel. On the one side there are virtues, innocence, goodness and spirituality; on the other evil, guilt and racisum. He is a modern novelist who has successful portrait the lantent conflict in the minds of modern man.

Golding's 1st novel Lord of the Flies was published in 1954. The novel was 1st entitled 'Stranger's from within'. He employs a straight forward writing style in Lord of the Flies one that avoids highly poetic language, lengthy description and philosophical interludes.

This novel is a mock- imitation of Ballantyne's 'Coral Island' , one of the most famous adventure stories for boys. In Ballantyne's story the 3 castaway boys who experience many hardships and exciting adventures look back upon their days on the island as a happy period. But in Golding's book, the situation is reversed. Here. the castaway boys are thrown upon a pleasant island- with fruits, meat, lagoons and beaches for bathing. But they make a hell of this paradise. The evil snake in them comes out into their garden of Eden and tempts from within, in bloody savagery. The danger comes from within, in Golding's book, while in Ballantyne's story, the threat is external.

Thus this novel combines fiction with fable; an imaginary story with a significant moral. The central theme of evil in the book is suggested by the title itself. Lots  of critical interpretation were already made by readers and critics. Some believe that this novel is based on the history of civilization, some other believe the novel explores fundamental religious issues, such as original sin and the nature of good and evil.

Although Golding's story is confine to the microcosm of a group of boys, it resounds with implications far beyond the bonds of the small island and explores problems and questions universal to the human experience. No one take care of them and they lose their innocence and eventually develop savagery. In the end, one is inclined to join Ralph in experiencing' the end of innocence, the darkness of man's heart'.

In the story, the pig's head on the stick symbolizes the Lord of the Flies. Golding chooses children as his protagonist. The innocence of the child and of man is a fallacy; by nature man has a terrible potentiality for evil. Golding uses lots of themes in this novel like civilization Vs savagery, Loss of innocence and so on...........

According to me it's a wonderful novel, the theme is still relevant in the 21st century. Every people is selfish, they cheat each other for there own benefit. Every one lose there goodness and mankind. Lord of the Flies is an appropriate title for a novel which teaches the moral that the dividing line between so called civilization and cruel barbarism is rather thin and if mankind is to build up an enduring society on democratic lines, all men should conquer the evil that lies within them. A good society can produce better children to the future!
